研究内容

地殻と上部マントルからなっている地球表層は、地球の中でも最も活動的であると考えられています。地球表層活動は、我々の生活とも密接に関係しており、このダイナミクスを明らかにすることは、私たちを取り巻く環境を理解するだけでなく、大地震発生などの社会生活に重要な情報を含んでいます。地球表層活動が最も活発なところは、海溝、海嶺などのプレート境界です。プレート境界のほとんどは,海底となっていますので、海底での観測が必要です。そこで、海底地震計などを用いた地震地殻変動観測、構造探査実験を中心として、研究を行っています。また、海域観測は,観測技術としてはフロンティアの領域ですので、目的の実験観測を行うための測器開発も行っています。
