Research Area : Tsunami and Historical Earthquakes
Research :
Earthquakes and tsunamis which occurred before the end of the 19th century
are studied mainly on a bases of documents materials.
Periodicity of a series of gigantic
earthquakes of Tokai-Nankai Earthquakes is discussed. In the recent few
years we made piston
coring on the bottom layer of
several lagoons (Lake Hamana, Tadasuga-Ike Pond in Susaki City, Shikoku,
and so on) and found out
several traces of pre-historical
tsunamis. It was clarified that descriptions of a small tsunami in January
26, 1700 at several points on
the Japanese Islands were the
records of a distant tsunami which was caused by a gigantic earthquake
at Cascadia Subduction Zone,
whose geological evidences were
found out on the Canadian and American Coasts.
Tsunamis and storm surges are
studied not only on the scientific viewpoint but also on the natural hazzard
mitigation. Since 1992,
large tsunamis occurred in succession
on the coasts of the circum pan-Pacific countries; 1992 Nicaraguan, 1992
Indonesia-Flores,
1994 East Java, 1994 Okushiri,1996
Irian Jaya, and 1998 Papua New Guinean tsunamis. Whenever large tsunamis
occurred we
organized international survey
teams and conducted field surveys on the damaged coast.
