Paleoearthquake and tsunami events along coastal lowlands: learning from 2011

Self Introduction

I’m interested in developing the history of tsunami events along coasts adjacent to subduction zones. We’ve had two earthquakes in the last decade or so, the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman and the 2011 Tohoku earthquakes, whose tsunamis caused considerable damage to life and property. I’d like to examine deposits from these two recent tsunamis, and historic as well as prehistoric events, to compare the similarities and differences in depositional environments and how this affects their preservation in the geological record.! !

Before joining ERI as a postdoc, I was at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore; first as a graduate student and then as a Research Associate. AT IISc, for my Ph.D. dissertation, I worked on the seismotectonics of the Andaman-Nicobar plate boundary (which was affected by the 2004 earthquake and tsunami) and the deformational and depositional characteristics of paleoevents based on the 2004 landforms and deposits in the Andaman Islands. ! !

I’m very happy to be working with Prof. Kenji Satake, here at ERI. Also, this is my first visit to Japan, and I look forward to life (and work) in Tokyo.
