Self Introduction

My research focuses on the study the crust and upper mantle of the Earth and its relation to tectonic deformation, using data from passive seismic arrays. I have led seismic experiments in the Himalaya, New Zealand, and the western United States; seismic, GPS and MT studies of the Rio Grande Rift; and have been involved with ocean bottom seismic experiments offshore New Zealand (MOANA and HOBITSS experiments).

While at ERI I will focus on analysis of data from ocean bottom seismic experiments, paying particular attention to the utility of arrays of seafloor pressure observations for Earth structure and tsunami studies. My ERI hosts are Professors Hitoshi Kawakatsu and Kimihiro Mochizuki. Mochizuki-san and I are on the investigation team for the Hikurangi Ocean Bottom Investigation of Tremor and Slow Slip (HOBITSS) experiment, and we deployed ocean bottom seismometers and seafloor pressure gauges offshore New Zealand in May 2014.

I am here in Japan with my teenage daughter Megan, who is attending an international school in Shinagawa-ku. We are enjoying living in and exploring Japan.

I am honored to be visiting ERI, and I look forward to meeting and interacting with many ERI faculty, researchers, and students. Please fee free to stop by my office (1-610).
