Heat flow observed on the incoming oceanic plate near trenches is often inconsistent with the seafloor age. Detailed surveys on the outer rise of the Japan Trench and on the floor of the Nankai Trough (in the vicinity of the trench axis) revealed that heat flow distributions in these areas are closely related to the structure of oceanic crust and can be attributed to heat transport by fluid circulation in the crust. In the Japan Trench, development of fractures in the oceanic crust associated with bending of the Pacific plate may control fluid circulation, while heterogeneity of the crustal structure originated from the spreading process of the Philippine Sea plate (Shikoku Basin) is probably an important factor in the Nankai Trough. Such fluid flow and heat transport in the subducting oceanic crust should have a significant influence on the physical/chemical conditions around the plate interface (seismogenic zone). We are thus planning to investigate tectonic processes on the seaward side of the trench, such as fracturing and fluid flow, modification of the incoming plate by the processes, and their influence on the subduction zone in cooperation with experts from various fields.
