@ | Izu Detachment Hypothesis The Izu Peninsula is colliding with Honshu, Japan. The upper crust of the Izu Peninsula would be offscraped in the future, and the frontal thrust would jump further to the south. There would appear a detachement fault beneath the peninsula. The dike intrusion event in 2000 near Miyake-Kozu, and the wide anomalous horizontal deformation in central Japan would be caused by the slip at the detachment (See Seno, 2004, PDF) for details. |
