Fig. 21 Instrumentally registered 1996 eruption of Hokkaido-Komagatake. Upper trace indicates a micro strain pulse (in N131oE direction) corresponding to the spindle-shaped eruption tremor. Eruption is characterized by a single strain pulse; 215 sec long extension of 1.6 x 10E-8, and several minutes long contraction of 2.1 x 10E-8. Spiky signals on the seismic record indicate minor earthquakes, which occurred mostly in ca. 9 minutes after the climax of eruption tremor. (Usu Volcano Observatory, 1997).
