Bose<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Scientific Reports 5, 15225 (2015) DOI: 10.1038\/srep15225<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The unknown constituents of the interior of our home planet have provoked the human imagination\u00a0and driven scientific exploration. We herein demonstrate that large neutrino detectors could be\u00a0used in the near future to significantly improve our understanding of the Earth\u2019s inner chemical\u00a0composition. Neutrinos, which are naturally produced in the atmosphere, traverse the Earth and\u00a0undergo oscillations that depend on the Earth\u2019s electron density. The Earth\u2019s chemical composition\u00a0can be determined by combining observations from large neutrino detectors with seismic\u00a0measurements of the Earth\u2019s matter density. We present a method that will allow us to perform a\u00a0measurement that can distinguish between composition models of the outer core. We show that\u00a0the next-generation large-volume neutrino detectors can provide sufficient sensitivity to reject\u00a0extreme cases of outer core composition.
