I am a Professor in, and Chairman of, the Department of Geophysics at Stanford University. My research interests cover most aspects of observational earthquake seismology. I grew up in the USA, in California and Arizona. I did my undergraduate work at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and earned my Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
I did postdoctoral research for one year at MIT before joining the Stanford faculty in 1990. I am interested in exploring ideas for research collaborations in the general area of strong ground motion prediction. I am particularly interested in exploring the degree to which the ambient seismic field can be used to help predict strong ground motion. I believe that Japan is the best place in the world to test and develop this idea, and I hope to initiate research collaborations to do this during my visit. In addition to being a professor, I am also the Deputy Director of the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC). I am very interested in exploring and increasing research collaboration between SCEC and ERI.
