Self Introduction

My name is Ramon Carbonell and I work at the department of Structure and Dynamics of the Earth in the Institute for Earth Sciences (Spanish Agency for Scientific Research - CSIC) in Barcelona Spain. My research has focused in the characterization of the lithosphere its structure and processes. This has involved the development of deep seismic imaging projects. I have mostly specialized in seismic techniques such as deep normal incidence and wide-angle seismic reflection methodologies and lately passive seismic imaging methods (tomography, receiver functions, surface waves etc.). Occasionally, I have been involved in multidisciplinary studies including gravity and MT datasets to help constrain the nature of the deep crust and upper mantle. Currently I am involve in a series of projects which focus on:

The Structure and evolution of the Gibraltar Arc System and the Atlantic Mediterranean transition. Recently an active source seismic reflection dataset has been acquired in Northern Africa, in Morocco. These data set includes a 700 km transect across the Atlas Mountain range and the Rif. A pseudo 3D large scale seismic study has also been carried out in the Rif.

Crustal growth and deformation mechanism of the microplate of Iberian Peninsula, this is connected with a relatively large research initiative within Europe which aims to understand continental size geodynamics, the evolution of the topography at European scale. A relatively large group of Spanish geophysicists have developed a multidisciplinary research project (TOPOIBERIA) which consists in the acquisition, processing and interpretation of a relatively large and dense grid of measurements within the Iberia Peninsula and surroundings (these include passive seismic data, GPS, MT etc).

Another line of research which I am also pursuing is the characterization of the shallow subsurface and fractured media. Mainly I am involve in the determination of the fine structure of the shallow subsurface and in the development and validation of seismic imaging techniques for assessing underground repositories for the geological storage of CO2.

(more information on the current research carried out can be found in http://www.ictja.csic.es/edt/rc)

During my stay at ERI I plan to work closely with Prof. Takashi in processing and inversion of active and passive source seismic data aimed to image the upper mantle.
