Self Introduction

During my stay at ERI, I would like to learn some details on several outstanding problems in geophysics through discussions with the experts here. The topics include: (1) Excitation of tsunami; (2) Physics of silent earthquakes; (3) Plate coupling along the coast of Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures. Regarding (1), I would like to know the importance of the kinetic energy imparted into water by horizontal motion of a sloping sea floor. Controversy prevails at present, and I would like to know the opinions of Drs. Satake, Furumura, Saito, Seno and others. Regarding (2), the phenomenology of silent earthquakes appears to be fairly well established now. Then, what is the physics? I would like to hear the opinions of Drs. Sano, Nakatani, Kato and others. Regarding (3), whether the plate boundary is “seismic” or “aseismic” has an important implication for seismic hazard in the area. Since there have been contradicting opinions on this, I would like to learn more about this from the ERI experts, like Dr. Kato.
