Self Introduction

My name is Oleg Pankratov; I am very happy to have the possibility to work with Prof. Utada and his collaborators on the study of the Earth's conductivity.

I am senior research scientist at the Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radiowave Propagation (IZMIRAN), Russian Academy of Sciences. I graduated from Moscow State University (Mathematics and Mechanics faculty, 1984) and got my Ph.D. in geophysics from IZMIRAN (1991).

My interests are processing, modeling, and inversion of electromagnetic data measured at the surface of the Earth, at the sea bottom, or elsewhere. Both processing and inversion parts of geoelectromagnetic science have many yet unsolved mathematical problems, solution of which could deliver more stable and detailed Earth’s interior images. One can ask following simple question: “what is the minimum amount of (mega|giga|tera)bytes of electromagnetic data should be measured in order to get an Earth’s interior image with a required accuracy?”. However this simple question has no answer yet. We measure large amounts of data and obtain fuzzy interior images. I believe that only a series of solutions (findings) could lead to the answer to this question and many other questions. On the other hand, electromagnetic data could be processed and inverted jointly with the other types of physical data (e.g., seismic, thermal, and gravity data). This approach also has many capabilities to enhance the inversion results.

I found life in Tokyo comfortable and content; people are friendly, so that I enjoy the environment a lot.
