Self Introduction
I am a CNRS Director of Research in IPGP where I am responsible of the Institutes’ transversal research Program in Volcanology. I am also co-Leader of the IAVCEI Commission on the Chemistry of Volcanic Gases and president of the Volcanology section of the French CNFGG (National Committee for Geophysics and Geodesy). I have a 43-year experience in studying active volcanoes worldwide and my researches are focused on magma degassing processes in relationship to eruption styles and the dynamics of magma plumbing systems. I have been specialized in studying volcanic gas emissions, before and during eruptions, using both chemical-isotopic tracers and remote sensing technics (UV and OP-FTIR spectroscopy), coupled with the analysis and modeling of volatiles dissolved in magmas (crystal melt inclusions). The gathered information, combined with geophysical data, is aimed at better understanding of how volcanoes work and at improved eruption forecasting. Lest just remind that the magmatic gas phase (bubbles) strongly influences the rheological properties and dynamics of ascent of silicate melts, can migrate upward faster than melts (providing precursory geochemical signals at the surface), and is ultimately the driving force of eruptions (through its volumetric expansion) and the common source of several types of seismic signals (tremor, LP and VLP events).

During my 3-month visiting stay in ERI I plan to contribute to the research/monitoring programs of the Volcanological Center headed by Prof. M. Takeo and favor research development on volcanic gas emissions and magma degassing processes at Japanese volcanoes in collaboration with other Institutes (JSG, GRC). Given the importance of cross-correlating multidisciplinary investigations to decipher the magma plumbing system of active volcanoes, I’ll be very happy to interact with interested scientists from the different ERI’s divisions. My office is on the fifth floor (502) of building-2, please drop by to chat.
