Self Introduction
I am interested in better understanding how small-scale physical interactions between solids and liquids can be appropriately represented in simple predictive models of macroscopic geophysical processes. My visit to ERI was motivated by the exciting work on granular dynamics that has been conducted here by Takahiro Hatano and his former post-doc, Osamu Kuwano. A puzzle that I have been working on concerns the relative scarcity of macroscopic frictional melts along mature fault zones. My student, Jiangzhi Chen, and I are pursuing the idea that changes to the thicknesses of shear zones during earthquakes may be important for limiting the maximum temperature rise and preventing macroscopic melting from taking place. I welcome further discussion of related efforts and other research topics that my group is engaged with, particularly those related to the rheology of slow-slip earthquakes, subglacial drainage and the controls on glacier sliding, and multiphase flow.
