My name is Danijel Schorlemmer and I am visiting Japan for the second time. After my first visit, I decided to spend more time in this country and to learn more about Japan but also about Japanese data. As a statistical seismologist, I strongly depend on large and high-quality datasets. The Japanese earthquake catalogs can be considered the richest, which makes them the default data for studying earthquake statistics. My main research targets are correlating statistical seismicity parameters with physical properties of earthquakes and faults. Any such study first employs a detailed analysis of the quality and completeness of the earthquake catalog used. During my stay in Japan, I am investigating the completeness of the catalog of the Japanese Meteorological Agency. This study will be basis for my second goal which I planning to achieve during my visit: Implementing a testing center for earthquake forecasts as part of the global Collaboratory for the Study of Earthquake Predictability (CSEP). This testing center will help rigorous investigations about earthquake forecast hypotheses and hopefully help improving earthquake predictability research not only in Japan but globally. In California, where I am co-chairing the Collaboratory, I am working as Research Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California in strong collaboration with the Southern California Earthquake Center.
