I am a Research Scientist in the field of measurement science technology, specifically, with focus on absolute gravimetry. I contributed to development of several generations of various absolute gravimeters in Ukraine (National Institute of Metrology), Germany (Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light) and Japan (National Astronomical Observatory in Mizusawa). Absolute gravimetry plays important role for science and engineering, such as fundamental metrology, geodesy and geophysics. As to the tasks of ERI, it provides a direct observational tool to study spatial or temporal subsurface density variations. In collocation with geodetic measurements of the vertical crustal displacement, it is therefore provide useful information to explore ore or oil deposits, monitor glacial changes, study earthquakes and volcanic activity, etc. My visit to ERI was motivated by the fact that such an advanced instrument is also developed at ERI by Assoc. Prof. Akito Araya. As the relevant applications require high sensitivity, robustness and stability for in-field observations in seismically un-quiet areas, we plan to further improve performance of the existing absolute gravimeter. It is expected to advance an analysis of measurement data, improve a vibration isolation system and perform actual in-field tests and measurements.
