Self Introduction

My main research interests are in the physics of magmatic processes including volcanic eruptions. My currently active projects are on the evolution of explosive eruption clouds as they mix with the atmosphere, on the physics of the propagation of dykes through elastic host rocks, on the mechanics of caldera collapse, and on the relationship between the distribution of volcanic edifices around large lithospheric fault systems.

On my current visit to Tokyo, I am invited by Tak Koyaguchi. We are working on a fluid dynamic model of chemical differentiation in magma reservoirs. We hope to develop an understanding of the physics of fractional crystallisation that will enable us to calculate chemical evolution of magmas due to cooling, including residual liquid composition and temperature and cumulate chemistry.
