My name is Jean-Pierre Vilotte, and I am professor at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris which is located in the city center of Paris. There, I am working in the seismology laboratory.
My research interests include mechanics and dynamics of earthquake sources, full wave field propagation in complex geological media and site effects, dynamics of frictional granular-type media with implications for gravitational debris flows. In my research, I combine both mathematical and computational approach.
More recently, I am involved in the development of a plate boundary observatory in Northern Chile, a collaborative project between the French CNRS, the University of Chile (Santiago) and the GFZ Potsdam. This project is targeted toward the study of intermediate deep earthquakes, the interaction between seismic and aseismic slip events, tremors and megathrust subduction earthquakes.
During this visit, I will be mainly collaborating with Professor Yamashita on mechanics of earthquake and tremor sources and plane to collaborate with other members of ERI involved in tectonic tremors analysis and seismic source inversion.
It is my fist visit to ERI and it is a great pleasure to be there. It is also a great opportunity for me to foster new collaborations.
