Most of my research focuses on regions that have previously been difficult to instrument, including the seafloor in the western Pacific and ice sheets in Antarctica. Targeted deployments of new seismological instrumentation in these remote areas have the potential to solve long-standing scientific questions. Sometimes totally new phenomena are discovered, such as long period seismic radiation from a slowly slipping ice stream.
Topics of current interest include imaging the magma production systems beneath volcanic arcs and backarc spreading centers, earthquakes in the outer rise plate bending region and their importance for slab hydration, seismicity related to ice movement, and how the mantle structure of Antarctica affects glacial isostatic adjustment.
I am Professor of Earth and Planetary Science at Washington University in St. Louis, and have recently completed terms as chairman of my department and on the Incorporated Research Institutions in Seismology (IRIS) Board of Directors.
In the past I have served as chair of the IRIS Data Management Standing Committee, IRIS Polar Networks Science Committee, the US Margins Program Steering Committee, and the US Ocean Bottom Seismograph Oversight Committee. I was elected Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2007.I am really happy to be here at ERI and look forward to interacting with many of you, so please come see me in room 610.
