My research is in between applied geophysics and seismology. I apply controlled-source type processing to uncontrolled-source recordings. To be able to do this, I work on array methods to first turn complicated seismic measurements into more ‘well-behaved’ data. In the past, I used seismic interferometry to extract reflections from natural seismicity and then applied seismic reflection imaging for making reflectivity images of the subsurface. Currently, I focus on locating induced seismicity using multiple reverberations.
At ERI I work together with Kiwamu Nishida and others for imaging the core-mantle boundary and mantle transition zone below Japan. As a preprocessing, we extract primary reflections between Hi-net stations. This could be done with conventional seismic interferometry, if there were well-sampled source arrays to integrate over. Instead we use receiver-pair seismic interferometry. With the latter technique, only the observations from one source are required, detected over a well-sampled array of receivers. Hence, we take advantage of the excellent receiver coverage of Hi-net to extract reflections and use these for reflection imaging.
I have a wide interest in strange Earth phenomena, including ourselves. So, please drop by room 2-415 for any discussion.
