Overview

The aim of CESERI is to contribute to the rapid progress of computational earth science by integrating high-performance numerical simulation technology and numerous observations collected by Earthquake Research Institute (ERI) and data processing techniques. By developing computational methods capable of using observation data and strengthening collaborative research with the related researchers of the University of Tokyo and from leading institutions over the world, we aim to establish international excellence in computational earth science and aim to foster outstanding younger generations that are interdisciplinary and internationally recognized in the field of earthquake, tsunami, and disaster research.

Background of the establishment of the Center

With the aim of strengthening collaboration between science and engineering, and integration of numerical simulation techniques, Research Center for Large-scale Earthquake, Tsunami and Disaster (LsETD) was established in ERI in April 2012. With the prospect of expanding the range of the applications of the various computational science technology developed by LsETD, we reorganized the center as “Research Center for Computational Earth Science” in September 2019, aiming at enhancing research organization and further accelerating integration with other fields in earth science.

Education and prospected outcomes

Utilizing the advantage that CESERI is in ERI, we will create computational earth science that integrates observation data and techniques with high-performance numerical simulation technology.
