Visiting UNAM and Caltech

Jan. 6, 2026

Prof. Nagao and 3 members visited the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM) and the Seismological Laboratory, Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, California Institute of Technology. At UNAM, they discussed future international collaboration. At Caltech, they conducted joint research with Professor Zachary Ross's laboratory and also had discussions with Professor Hiroo Kanamori.

IWIRISS 2025

The International Workshop on Interdisciplinary Research of Information Science and Seismology (IWIRISS) 2025 was held over three days at the Earthquake Research Institute, The University of Tokyo. The workshop featured 31 oral presentations from five countries and nine poster presentations. Over 50 researchers participated, engaging in active discussions and international exchange.

Japan–Singapore Joint Research Kickoff Meeting

The kickoff meeting for the JST NEXUS Japan–Singapore joint research project “AI-Driven Approaches for Earthquake Safety and Sustainability” (PI: Daido Nagao, FY2025–2027) was held at Nanyang Technological University. Discussions were conducted with the Singapore team led by Associate Professor Tong Ping.

Professor Zachary Ross and three students from the California Institute of Technology Seismological Laboratory stayed at the Earthquake Research Institute for a short visit. More details are available here.

Best Presentation Award at JSAS 2025

At the 2025 Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Applied Statistics in Toyama, Mr. Toshiro Kusui received the Best Presentation Award for his talk on deep-learning-based modeling of slow earthquakes.

Visiting Caltech

Dr. Shinya Kato visited the California Institute of Technology, Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, Seismological Laboratory in Pasadena, California. During his 3-month stay he conducted joint research with Dr. Zachary Ross.

2024 JSAS Best Paper Award from Japanese Society of Applied Statistics

May. 9, 2024

The joint paper by Project Assistant Professor Tokuda and Associate Professor Nagao, titled "Observation Point Selection for Low-Frequency Earthquake Detection via Multiple Clustering Based on a Mixture of Wishart Models," published in the special issue "Machine Learning and Its Applications" of the Journal of Japanese Society of Applied Statistics, has received the "JSAS Best Paper Award". The award ceremony was held at the Applied Statistics Conference at Kyushu University.

Visiting Caltech

Dec. 4–8, 2023

Prof. Nagao and Drs. Tokuda, Gerardo Mendo, Kato, and Church visited the California Institute of Technology, Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, Seismological Laboratory in Pasadena, California. During their one-week stay, they held meetings with the Caltech members, including Dr. Zachary Ross and Professor Emeritus Hiroo Kanamori, to introduce each other's research and discuss future collaboration. Additionally, on the final day, Prof. Nagao gave a one-hour lecture.

Accepted for STAR-E Project by MEXT

The research subject investigated by Prof. Hiromichi Nagao has been accepted for STAR-E (Seismology TowArd Research innovation with data of Earthquake) Project by MEXT. Under the STAR-E project, we will work on integration researches of information science and seismology.
