Below are ongoing and recent
eruptions in Japan
Data are preliminary and
subjected to change; when use the text and images pasted here, should contact

- Sakurajima Volcano, erupted
since 4 June 2006; new eruption started in the middle slope of the Minamidake
(06/10/2006)
- Anatahan Volcano (Northern
Marianas), inspections in July
2003 and August 2005
- Asama Volcano,
erupted on 1 September and intermittent eruptions continued (10/05/04)
- Aso
Volcano, mud eruptions within the summit crater (01/17/04)
- Kirishima
Volcano, new fumarolic activity in middle December (01/17/04)
- Aso
Volcano, continuous volcanic tremor following very small phreatic eruptions
(07/28/03)
- Asama
Volcano, puff of small amount of ash (06/02/03)
- Suwanose-jima
Volcano, frequent explosions (09/12/02)
- Hachijojima Volcano, delined seismic activity but
LF events (9/04/02).
- Izu-Torishima Volcano, small eruptions waned (08/21/02)
- Asama
Volcano, high seismic activity (06/27/02)
- Satsuma-Iwojima Volcano, ash eruptions (06/07/02)
- Iojima Volcano, small phreatic eruption (10/19/01)
- Hakone Volcano, high seismic activity and swelling
(8/08/01)
- Fuji
Volcano; high seismicity in the end of April and early May, but no
other anomalous signs (5/11/01)
- Miyakejima Volcano; extremely high SO2 and small
low-frequency eathquakes (5/11/01)
- Sakurajima Volcano, an explosions in October (10/16/00)
- Bandaisan Volcano, earthquake crisis (8/16/00)
- Usu
Volcano; phreatomagmatic eruption started on March 31; decreasing the
activity by mid-May, but still continued. About 60-m uplifting of the crater
area (6/01/00)
- Iwate
Volcano, increasing activity, though still no surface manifestation
(11/16/99)
- Kirishima
Volcano, elevated volcanic earthquake events (11/16/99)
- Kuchinoerabujima
Volcano, quake swarm, since July (9/17/99)
- Me-Akan Volcano, small phreatomagmatic eruption
on 9 November 1998 (11/12/98)
- Hokkaido-Komagatake Volcano, small phreatic eruption
on 25 October 1998 (11/12/98)
- Izu-Tobu Volcano Group, swarm of earthquakes during
the late April-early May. (5/16/98)
- Adatara Volcano, Volcanic gas fatality at Adatara
Volcano, four hikers killed. (9/30/97).
- Akita-Yakeyama
Volcano, a small eruption on 16 August 1997 (8/25/97)
- Hakkoda
Volcano, three soldiers inhaling CO2-rich gas died. (7/17/97)
- Fukutoku-okanoba
submarine volcano, discolored-sea surface found in February-May. (6/16/97)
- Kuju
Volcano, seismologically low in level, keeping powerful emission of
steam and deflation of the crater area during June- September.
- Unzen
Volcano, no magma supply for more than 1 year, but block-and-ash flows
on 10-13 February 1996; keeping slow deformation of dome.
