Theme: Development and Performance Evaluation of Low-Cost Seismic Retrofitting System for Masonry Building Structures
Host: Koichi KUSUNBOKI
Introduction: I completed my Master's and Ph.D. Degree in Structural Engineering from Sungkyunkwan University, South Korea in 2019. I am also a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the field of "Structures" from the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC). Approved supervisor for Master and Ph.D. students from the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan. My field of interest is related to the development of seismic retrofitting techniques for highrise buildings and civil structures. My work has been published in well-established SCI international journals of structural engineering, earthquake engineering, and material sciences. Achieved patents for developing seismic retrofitting systems for buildings and other structures. Currently, working with Professor Kusunoki Kiochi for the development of an efficient damping system with the structural health monitoring system.
Research Report:
1. Introduction
During the stay at the Earthquake Research Institute (ERI) University of Tokyo, I worked with Professor Kusunoki Koichi laboratory. As for my research I developed an innovative self-centering box slit damper to enhance the seismic performance of building structures. This low-damage device aims to minimize earthquake-induced damage, residual displacement, and incurred downtime to achieve performance targets functionality under design-level shaking. The self-centering box slit damper composes of two hollow steel boxes assembled in a telescopic fashion, combined with prestressed disc springs in the inner box to provide self-centering forces. This is an advantage over conventional slit dampers which, despite its wide usage to provide energy dissipation, cannot return to their original position after yielding of the slits.
