Introduction: Cheng-Horng Lin is one of senior seismologists at the Institute of Earth Sciences, Academia Sinica in Taipei. His research interests are not only earthquakes, but also volcanoes, tectonics and landslides. In the past decade, his major research works have been focusing on two active volcanoes in Taiwan (Tatun volcano group and Turtle island). He has led a team to establish the Taiwan volcano observatory at Tatun (TVO) since 2011. A variety of real-time volcano monitoring systems have been conducted at TVO for studying the active volcanoes in Taiwan. They include (1) a dense broadband seismic network and some infrasonic sensors, (2) numerous geochemical observation sites, (3) a GPS array and other geodetic survey, (4) some geothermal measurements in the fumaroles and boreholes and (5) other geophysical observations.
