Institute: Structural and Earthquake Engineering at the University of Canterbury
Title: Senior Lecturer
Country/Region: New Zealand
Period: 2023/03/20-2023/06/01
Theme: Optimal placement of sensors for structural damage detection
Host: Yusuke MAIDA
Introduction: Reagan Chandramohan is a Senior Lecturer in Structural and Earthquake Engineering at the
University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in
Civil Engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India. Following
a brief stint in industry, he obtained his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Structural Engineering
from Stanford University, USA.

Research conducted by his group aims to minimise human and economic losses incurred during
earthquakes by enhancing the seismic safety of our built environment. He seeks to advance the
state-of-the-art in structural risk and reliability assessment using modern high-performance
computing tools and statistically rigorous structural analysis techniques. He employs large-
scale numerical simulations to answer fundamental questions relating the characteristics of
earthquake ground motion to the nonlinear dynamic response and collapse behaviour of
structures.

His time at ERI will be spent working with Prof. Yusuke Maida, Prof. Kusunoki Koichi, and
Dr. Trevor Yeow in the area of seismic structural health monitoring, which entails detecting
signatures of structural damage after earthquakes, using data recorded by motion sensors
installed on buildings.
