Introduction: Vladimir VUKOBRATOVIC is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad, Serbia. He is employed at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geodesy, and is engaged on several courses related to concrete and masonry structures. In 2015 he obtained his PhD title at the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Structural and earthquake engineering are his general areas of interest, with an emphasis on seismic analysis, design and assessment of structures and nonstructural components. Over the past 15 years, besides academic and research work, he has been involved in many projects of residential, office, school, hotel and public buildings, stadiums, and sports and industrial facilities. Through the practical engineering work, he has gained a wide hands-on experience.
During his visit to the ERI, Vladimir will work with Professor Koichi KUSUNOKI and his research team on the topic of seismic jerk in reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. Jerk is a physical property reflected through a sudden change of acceleration, and is expressed in m/s3. During an earthquake action, the occurrence of jerks is inevitable. Although an increasing interest in jerk has been observed lately, the knowledge on its influence on structural response is still low. However, several previous studies have indicated that jerks play an important role in the nonlinear response and the damage of RC building structures, which is an issue that deserves further attention. The main objective of the proposed research is to examine the influence of jerk on the seismic response of RC buildings in more detail, and to use the findings for the further development of structural health monitoring techniques.
When out of office, Vladimir likes spending time outdoors with his family and friends, and he is a big fan of running, all kinds of summer and winter sports, and travelling. Last but not least, Vladimir is fascinated with Japan, its culture and people, so he is really looking forward to his second visit to the ERI!
