Title: Assistant Professor
Country/Region: Hong Kong
Period: 2025/5/1 - 2025/6/30
Theme: Characterizing deep long-period volcanic earthquake activity in Japan
Host: Yosuke AOKI
Introduction: Yen Joe Tan is currently an assistant professor in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Before joining CUHK, he was a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University after receiving his Ph.D. from Columbia University. As a seismologist, he studies earthquake, volcanic, and earth surface processes, including those occurring beneath the ocean. He is an associate editor of Seismica, a community-driven, Diamond Open Access seismology/earthquake science peer-reviewed journal.
Research Report:
I visited for two months (May-June 2025) to collaborate with Prof. Yosuke Aoki on volcano seismicity. During the visit, we discussed how to constrain the source mechanism of long-period earthquakes at Mt Fuji and the potential of applying a deep-learning-based workflow to generate a high-resolution earthquake catalogue there, and managed to obtain some promising initial results. During the visit, I gave a seminar on submarine volcanism while my PhD student gave a seminar about a deep learning model that can pick P and S phases for both volcano-tectonic and long-period earthquakes which we recently developed. During my visit, I also had fruitful discussions with So Ozawa, Osamu Sandanbata, Yuji Itoh, Adèle Doucet, Hélène Le Mével, Chengxin Jiang, Yihe Huang, and Zhigang Peng about various earthquake/volcano-related topics. I also really enjoyed attending the many seminars during my visit.
