Support for Graduate Students

The Earthquake Research Institute has good reputation for its excellent research environment. In order to further improve the research environment, various types of support for graduate students are available at the Earthquake Research Institute (office in charge: The Office of Education and Training for Young Scientists).

1. Financial support

The importance of financial support for graduate students is widely recognized, and we provide substantial financial support through programs offered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (JSPS Fellowship Program, etc.) and the University of Tokyo (WINGS ― World-leading Innovative Graduate Study Program, SPRING GX, etc.), but the number of students who can receive such support is limited. Therefore, each department offers financial aid programs mainly for those students who are not eligible for aid and does its best to support them. In addition to support programs offered by the graduate school in which they are enrolled (e.g., Research Assistant for Doctoral Students in the Graduate School of Science, Excellent Research Assistant for Master’s degree in the Graduate School of Science, etc.), students at the Earthquake Research Institute are eligible to apply for support programs offered by the Earthquake Research Institute as below.

(1) Earthquake Research Institute Research Assistant (ERI RA)

Doctoral students are eligible for this program. Support is provided for students who are carrying out a research project with a research motivation above the standard level. The amount of support is 400,000 yen per year (as of 2024).

(2) Earthquake Research Institute Excellent Research Assistant (ERI Excellent RA)

Master’s students are eligible for this program. Support is provided to students with excellent research plans. The amount of support is 320,000 yen per year (as of 2024).

2. Research support

(1) Overseas Study Program (for Doctoral and Master’s course students)

Support is provided for transportation and living expenses for students who wish to stay at an overseas research institution for 1-2 months to conduct research.

(2) Short-term overseas travel expense support

Support is provided for transportation and living expenses for students who wish to travel overseas for 1-2 weeks to present their research at overseas academic conferences, etc.

(3) Student Week (around November)

A research presentation meeting is held for master’s students who are preparing for their master’s thesis presentations to provide frank discussions and advice. Around the same time, we also hold a poster presentation session for graduate students and researchers to actively exchange opinions on their daily research.

3. Job hunting support (around March)

We invite people from government agencies (Japan Meteorological Agency, Japan Coast Guard, Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, etc.) and independent administrative agencies (JOGMEC, etc.) to visit us and hold information sessions.
