Active Faulting and Earthquakes in Eastern Iran

Speaker: Richard T. Walker
Iran is one of the most seismically active countries on Earth and has suffered from many destructive earthquakes throughout its history. But very little is known about the slip-rates – and hence the average interval between earthquakes – on the major faults. I will describe our attempts to measure the late Quaternary slip-rate on several of the major faults of eastern Iran by dating alluvial fans, river terraces, and lake-bed sediments displaced by faulting.
