Water, Water, Everywhere: Geophysical Approaches to Mapping Water (and Melt) at Subduction Zones

Prof. Rob Evans (ウッズホール海洋研究所)

Water plays a critical role in subduction zones, including as a vehicle
of chemical transport, as a trigger for melting and as an influence on
mantle rheology. Water is released from the incoming plate at a variety
of depths depending on the storage mechanism of the water in the crust
or mantle. Geophysical constraints on the water budget of the incoming
plate and the pathways of fluid release have been limited to date. I
will present results from several settings and using different
techniques which have attempted to improve our understanding of these
important processes.
