Title:
Roles of stress and pore-fluid pressure on earthquake generation
Abstract:
This seminar presents my research on stress, pore-fluid pressure, and
earthquake generation. I first introduce inversion methods developed for
estimating stress fields and pore-fluid pressure from seismic data.
Applications include absolute stress estimation, investigation of
earthquake generation processes using changes in Energetics-based Failure
Stress (DEFS), and nationwide assessment of seismic potential in Japan. I
then extend stress-based approaches to volcanic systems, showing how fluid
intrusion can induce both deviatoric and isotropic stress changes. Finally,
I discuss earthquakes and volcanic activity from the perspective of elastic
strain-energy accumulation and release in the Earth.
